Morse Code Explained: How It Works and How to Translate It

SnipKit Team6 min read

You see ··· --- ··· in a movie or an escape room and wonder what it means. Morse code turns every letter into a pattern of dots and dashes — a system so reliable it has survived 160 years unchanged. Below: how it works, the full morse code alphabet chart, and examples. The Morse Code Translator converts text to Morse and back in one click.

How Morse Code Works

Two signals: a dot ("dit") and a dash ("dah"). A dash is three times the length of a dot. That is the entire symbol set.

Timing separates letters from noise:

  • Within a letter — 1 unit of silence between signals.
  • Between letters — 3 units of silence.
  • Between words — 7 units of silence.

The alphabet is designed around letter frequency. E (most common English letter) = single dot. T = single dash. Rare letters like Q and Z get longer codes. This minimizes transmission time.

Letters (A–Z)

A· —J· — — —S· · ·
B— · · ·K— · —T
C— · — ·L· — · ·U· · —
D— · ·M— —V· · · —

Digits follow a simple pattern: 1 (· — — — —) through 5 (· · · · ·) shift one dot to dash, 6–0 reverse. The translator handles digits automatically.

Translating Morse Code

Split on pauses: 3-unit gaps mark letter boundaries, 7-unit gaps mark word boundaries. Look up each dot-dash group in the chart above.

HELLO in Morse: ···· · ·—·· ·—·· ———

SOS in Morse: ··· ——— ··· — three dots, three dashes, three dots. Not an acronym — chosen in 1906 for its unmistakable symmetry.

For longer messages, the Morse Code Translator handles text to morse code and morse code to text instantly. For other formats: Text to Binary, HEX to ASCII, Binary to Decimal.

Where Morse Code Is Still Used Today

  • Ham radio — CW (continuous wave Morse) cuts through interference that kills voice.
  • Emergency signaling — SOS via flashlight, mirror, tapping, or whistle.
  • Aviation — VOR and NDB beacons transmit their identifier in Morse.
  • Accessibility — Android Gboard includes a Morse input mode for limited mobility.
  • Pop culture — escape rooms, geocaching, ARGs, and movies use Morse constantly.

FAQ

What is SOS in Morse code?

SOS is ··· ——— ··· — three dots, three dashes, three dots, sent as one continuous sequence. Not an acronym — the pattern was chosen in 1906 because it is short, symmetrical, and unmistakable.

Is Morse code still used today?

Yes. Ham radio operators use it for long-distance low-power communication. Aviation beacons broadcast identifiers in Morse. Android Gboard supports Morse input for accessibility. It also appears in emergency signaling and escape rooms.

How do you read Morse code?

Split the signal on pauses: short gaps separate signals within a letter, medium gaps (3 units) separate letters, long gaps (7 units) separate words. Look up each pattern in the chart, or use a morse code translator for instant decoding.
